Rock band 'Pixies' plan new material on upcoming tour

The Pixies, the influential alternative rock band that last year released its first album in more than 20 years, is planning more fresh material on an upcoming tour.
The band announced Monday a series of shows across the United States starting in May including at New York's historic Beacon Theatre and at the Boston Calling festival in the Pixies' hometown.
The shows will feature the "debut of some brand-new Pixies songs, written and arranged just in the past few months," the band said on its website.
"All headline shows will feature a new and more varied set packed with songs from the entire Pixies catalogue, full of distortion howls and all the vivid dissonance a Pixies fan would expect," it said.
The Pixies played more than 120 shows in 2013 and 2014 and released the new album "Indie Cindy," although the reformed band parted ways with bassist Kim Deal who frequently clashed with frontman Black Francis.
The Pixies became an underground sensation in the late 1980s with rough guitar distortion and absurdist lyricism as witnessed in songs such as "Debaser," which was inspired by Salvador Dali's surrealist film "Un Chien Andalou."
The unkempt sound and ironic noir elements proved an inspiration for alternative rock bands including Nirvana, which took popular music in a less mainstream direction in the early 1990s.
