Egypt's role is crucial in resolving issues of the region and Africa, said Portugal's fromer prime minister António Guterres.

Guterres was answering a question by MENA reporter following a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Cairo.

The meeting was an opportunity to assert Cairo's central role in international efforts to address issues in the Middle East, said Guterres.

He termed this role also as one of its kind in the region.

The ex-premier said he will work, if elected as UN chief, with Egypt closely to resolve these regional catastrophic crises.

He hailed also Egypt's African role, noting that Cairo is currently leading the African group in the UN
