Cairo - Arab Today

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received Wednesday Marisa Matias, the Head of EU parliament’s committee of relations with the Mashreq countries, on boosting ties with the European bloc.

During the meeting, Shoukry stressed Egypt’s keenness on enhancing ties with EU in various fields, especially on cooperation between the Egyptian House of Representatives and the EU parliament, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

Matias was interested in getting familiar with Egypt’s views on significant regional issues, especially the latest developments in Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Iraq, in addition to Egyptian efforts of fighting terrorism and countering illegal migration, Abu Zeid said.

The EU MP praised Egyptian efforts to uproot extremism and terrorist organizations.

Shoukry expounded economic and political conditions in Egypt, citing the economic reform program adopted by the government in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Matias underscored the interest of the EU parliament and different European institutions in boosting ties with Cairo, due to its strategic importance in the region.
