Egypt's FM meets permanent representatives of Asian, Pacific states at UN

Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met on Friday with permanent representatives of Asian and Pacific countries at the United nations (UN), Foreign Ministry spokesman Badr Abdel Aati said.

Shourky's meetings comes within the framework of Egypt's bid to gain a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the years 2016 – 2017, Abdel Aati added.

The Egyptian top diplomat briefed the attendees on Egypt's priorities that will be put forward at the UN once elected, according to Abdel Aati.

Egypt is keen on contacting all member states at the UN to deal with different issues within a comprehensive perspective, he asserted.

The distinguished relations binding Egypt and all Asian countries will encourage those countries to support Egypt's nomination for the non-permanent seat at the UN, Shoukry said.

Shoukry and the Asian and Pacific permanent representatives discussed the role played by Egypt as a founding member of the United Nations in international peace and security keeping efforts and its commitment to promoting joint international action under the UN umbrella to achieve collective security, Abdel Aati underlined.

The foreign minister asserted that Egypt is keen to establish a powerful multilateral international system that helps face the international challenges and respond to the peoples' aspirations, Abdel Aati highlighted.
