UN : Israel must pay compensation to Lebanon for oil

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)'s Second Panel on International Economic Issues has issued a new resolution which demands Israel to pay a compensation for environmental damage it had inflicted on the Lebanese coast by Israeli bombardment of oil storage reservoirs that resulted in an oil leakage in Lebanon's eastern coast in 2006. The Lebanese permanent ambassador at the UN, Carolyn Ziyadeh, stated that an absolute majority of UN-member countries had voted in favor of this resolution which reflects the international community's commitment to reinforcement of the rule of law and sustainable development. The Lebanese ambassador in the UN pointed out that Israeli air raids targeted oil storage facilities on 15 July 2006 and resulted in incineration of 5 oil reservoirs and caused an oil spill which triggered the worst environmental catastrophe ever on the eastern coasts of the Mediterranean.
