Physicists to discuss future of computers and Higgs boson discovery

Details of the discovery of the Higgs boson by means of the Large Hadro Collider, the future of computing technology, and other topical problems of physics and computer technologies will be discussed at an international conference on computational physics here on Wednesday. The conference is to open in the building of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences on Leninsky Prospekt (Lenin Avenue). The conference is held under the auspices of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, Lev Shchur, chairman of the conference's organizing committee, the leading researcher at the RAS Institute of Theoretical Physics named after Landau, told Itar-Tass. Support is provided by the Branch of Physical Sciences and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. "Such conferences are held in Europe once in three years. America and Asia with Oceania are venues of conferences in the other two years," Shchur said. This forum is held in Russia for the first time. It has drawn over 200 scientists from more than 30 countries, with about a half of participants representing Russia. The conference will run through Saturday. Provision is made for 135 oral presentations and tens of poster ones. "Plenary reports are made by scientists who are foremost in this field. Hungarian physicist Dezso Horvath, a representative of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), will be the first to make a report on the theme of 'How 'Five Events' Relating to the Suspected Higgs Boson' were Extracted from a Heap of Experimental Data'. Our compatriot Natalya Artemyeva will tell us how bolides, or fire balls, explode in the atmosphere and what actually happened in the sky of Chelyabinsk earlier this year and over Tunguska River in 1908," the chairman of the organizing committee said.
