Damascus - Arab Today

Social Affairs Minister, Kinda al-Shammat, stressed that the development of rural areas and local communities is a top priority of the ministry's new structure. The minister clarified in a statement to SANA on Sunday that work on the draft project of a full amendment of the law of supporting the rights of people with disability has finished and it will take its route within the constitutional mechanisms to the Cabinet and People's Assembly. To this end, specialised workshops are held to discuss the law and publish it via websites for benefiting from all viewpoints, particularly those concerned, taking into account international laws relevant. Al-Shammat renewed the ministry's keenness on applying the law once it is issued according to the current circumstances. The minister pointed out that the National Committee for People with Disability will be the alternative of the Central Council of the Disabled, in addition to establishing the Disabled Department in the provinces. She pointed out that other ministries concerned should implement the tasked missions in accordance with the National Disability and find an appropriate formula. "We need something feasible that supports people with disabilities away from poetic mottos in order for them to be effective and productive individuals in the society," the minister said. The ministry of social affairs is working now on two tracks, the first of which is related to its ordinary tasks while the other is interested in the relief file, according to Dr al-Shammat. The minister said that Directorate of Family Affairs is established as an alternative of the Social Defence Department. It has been broadened to include the elderly, the juvenile delinquents, the orphans and those who lost parental care, in addition to all topics related to childhood and women empowerment.
