Madrid - UPI

Sister Maria Gomez Valbuena of Spain's Sisters of Charity refused to counter allegations she stole a woman's baby 29 years ago, officials said Thursday. Sister Valbuena arrived at court in Madrid around 8 a.m. amid a media frenzy. The 80-year-old nun was the first person called to the stand one of the infamous "stolen babies" cases. When called to testify, Sister Valbuena invoked her right to remain silent. Maria Luisa Torres accuses Valbuena of taking her daughter from her when she gave birth in the Santa Cristina clinic in Madrid in 1982. Valbuena allegedly told Torres her daughter was stillborn so she could take her away because she was an "adulteress," not married to the father of her child. Torres met her 29-year-old daughter, Pilar, for the first time eight months ago, ThinkSpain reported.
