Abu Dhabi - Arab Today

Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum will be a high-profile attendee at the inaugural Emirates Women's Day, to be held in Abu Dhabi on August 28.

The Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy (SFBMLSA) has decided to mark this year's ‘Emirates Women's Day' with a grand parade and demonstration of sports at the Yas Mall from 5.30 pm on Friday.

The event was announced at the UAE National Olympic Committee (UAE NOC) premises by UAE NOC Executive Member Dr Mai Al Jaber in the presence of Maryam Al Omaira, Marketing and Events, SFBMLSA and UAE NOC officials Omar Abdul Rahman and Wajdan Al Dahkooni, on Sunday.

"Women today play a crucial role in society and it is our desire to have more women involved in sports and allied sectors so that the UAE can flourish as one of the fastest-growing nations in the world. With August 28 declared as ‘Emirates Women's Day' we thought it is apt to have a true celebration of everything related to women,” Dr Mai told Gulf News.

"The presence of Sheikha Maitha will be a huge inspiration to all our women, and though it is meant to be a Women's day, we welcome everyone to attend the parade and special celebrations that we have planned next Friday,” she added.

The day's activities will commence with the parade starting off at the Yas Mall and go through the surrounding areas, followed by a special demonstration from the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Women's team.

Sheikha Maitha is expected to attend in her role as one of the most successful women sportspersons in the UAE along with the national football and basketball teams. "This event is definitely not just for women. It is open to everyone who support women and their advancement and empowerment in our society,” Dr Mai said.
