Beijing - XINHUA
The percentage of Lao women in the industry and trade business sector is now higher than 40 percent, according to state-run daily Vientiane Times on Tuesday. The information came as part of a report by the National Commission for the Advancement of Women at the annual Government Office meeting on Monday. The meeting's aim was to evaluate the National Strategy for the Advancement of Women 2011-2015 which aims to eliminate discrimination against women. "This meeting will focus on gender equality and the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. This includes showing our support for the fight against domestic violence," said Khempheng Pholsena, President of the National Commission for the Advancement of Women. Experts from around the country discussed the advancement and integration of women in relation to fulfilling Millennium Development Goals. The meeting expressed its support for more women to be admitted to courses in political administrative theory and law in order to see them in high-ranking government positions. Other points covered included fighting the idea that discrimination and violence against women was commonplace, continuing the "Love your Country" campaign and establishing developmental status for families, villages and districts regarding gender equality.
