Flash floods kill 1 on Greek Peloponnese peninsula

A woman died when flash floods hit a town on the Peloponnese peninsula Sunday night, Greek authorities said on Monday. The victim is believed to be a 55-year-old Serbian living in a basement. Fire brigade officials said she was entrapped in the house when a wall collapsed. Argos, a town about 160 km south of Athens, was hit hard by storms Sunday night. Two overflown rivers have damaged buildings and farmland. "It was a nightmare. I have never seen anything like that in my life," Mayor Dimitris Kabossos said. Nearby regions have seen similar problems from flooding due to heavy rains. Fire brigades responded to more than 250 calls to pump water from homes and stores. Last month, four persons were killed by flash floods on the southeastern Aegean Sea island of Rhodes.
