The Kingdom of Bahrain has won the vast majority of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) presidency during the 21st session of the General Assembly of State Parties to the 1972 World Heritage Convention held on November 14-15, 2017 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The World Heritage Committee named Shaikha Haya bint Rashid Al Khalifa as the WHC president for the year 2018.

President of Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA), Shaikh Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, in her speech marking the occasion, took pride in accomplishing a global cultural achievement despite the challenges faced by the Arab world.

The BACA President said Bahrain leadership has been the leading supporter of the national cultural movement, noting the leadership’s directives that have paved the way for the development of the cultural movement, including the establishment of the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage.

She said Shaikh Haya bint Rashid Al Khalifa has been nominated for the WHC presidency in recognition of her success in chairing the UN General Assembly 2006 before serving as Bahrain Permanent Representative to the UNESCO.

She added that Bahrain would be ready to host the next WHC session at the end of June 2018, welcoming all guests to learn about Bahrain’s ancient civilizations.

She explained Bahrain would invest this achievement in uplifting the world heritage in general and the Arab world's in particular
