Australian company: 1 of its partners used in New York Times hack

An Australian Internet company says hackers that caused an outage at The New York Times website apparently used one of its sales partners to gain entry. Melbourne IT said it will cooperate with the reseller and with law enforcement agencies in the investigation, the Los Angeles Times reported. The company said the hackers apparently got access to the reseller's user name and password and got from there into the Times site. Many people who tried to access the Times website Tuesday instead got to a page that said "Hijacked by the SEA," referring to the Syrian Electronic Army. The same group appeared to have tried similar operations against some Twitter accounts and Huffington Post U.K. but were less successful. The Syrian Electronic Army has made similar attacks in the recent past against other Western news operations. Melbourne IT provides computer services, including registering domain names.
