Khartoum - Abedalgoum Ashmeag
Workers in Sudanese state television have staged a protest against a six-month delay in wages, amid fears the current fiscal climate could aggravate tough living conditions even further. Protesters chanted, demanding the resignation of Sudan’s Director of Television, meanwhile urging the authorities to intervene immediately. Police secured the media organisation’s headquarters as demonstrators reportedly tried to prevent the TV boss’ entry. Sudanese television is in the midst of a dire financial crisis, sharpened by workers’ demands for wages which are now six months late. Some believe state media may encounter significant change in coming months, according to a reform package instigated by Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party [NCP]. A Sudanese member of parliament, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said: “The authorities are planning to address a number of financial and administrative affairs,” while also denying that state TV is being neglected by the government.
