Algiers - KUNA

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on Thursday declared October 22nd National Press Day just like other professions and social categories. The decree came in a message by the Algerian leader from France, where he is receiving medical treatment from recent health trouble, to mark the World Press Freedom Day. In his message, the president reaffirmed "the state commitment to endow the national press and information sector with legal mechanisms and various forms of support to allow it to fulfill its noble mission without restriction of its freedom so that it can access the special place it deserves in the world of information and knowledge". "With regard to the part of this sector in promoting mankind, defense of the society foundations and the contribution to the overall development, I declare October 22nd, a National Press Day, likewise the other socio-professional categories, in tribute to the publishing on 22 October 1955, of the first issue of 'El-Mouqawama El-Djazairia' paper (Algerian resistance), body of National Liberation Front (FLN) and the National Liberation Army (ALN), especially as we are celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of national independence," he added. The Algerian President congratulated media actors on this fresh gain in recognition of their struggles, contributions and role in the service of progress and prosperity of the nation," he said.
