Amman - Petra

The ‏National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) signed on Thursday a cooperation agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in which the Japanese Agency will make a comprehensive study of the electricity sector for the coming 15 years.
The agreement, which will be implemented by the JICA in cooperation with NEPCO, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) aims at stabilizing the electrical supply in Jordan from 2015-2034.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ghaleb Maabreh, NEPCO Director General Abdel Fattah Daradkeh and EMRC Commissioner Wejdan Rabady signed the agreement on behalf of Jordan while JICA Chief Representative of Jordan Office, Shokichi Sakata signed the deal on behalf of JICA.
The contribution of JICA in the development of the electricity sector in Jordan began in 1980, when the Japanese agency lent the Kingdom $225 million, as well as grants in the form of projects and technical cooperation studies, which included the development of the Electricity Training Center in NEPCO, the training of 72 Jordanian engineers and technicians in Japan and the dispatch of 65 Japanese experts and volunteers to Jordan.
"Despite the challenges facing the electricity sector in Jordan, I think that the Jordanian people are able to overcome these challenges and JICA will work in order to achieve comprehensive and dynamic development," Sakata said.
Maabreh praised the cooperation with JICA and the Japanese support to Jordan to enhance the development process in the Kingdom.
