Winnipeg - UPI

Manitoba residents were preparing for the worst this weekend as the rising Souris River threats the region, officials said. The river, which caused severe flooding in Minot, N.D., was expected to crest between Tuesday and Thursday, in southwestern Manitoba, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. Volunteers have already begun to arrive in Souris, Manitoba, to help with a massive sandbagging effort to hold off the river. Highway 3, east of Melita, Manitoba, has been closed, along with the ring dike around the town, which is making it difficult for emergency vehicles to access the town. The biggest concern for the area are the three dikes that protect the sewage lift station, if which are breached by flooding, would mean the town will have to be evacuated.
