Geneva - MENA

Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations Office at Geneva Amr Ahmed Ramadan called Wednesday for an international convention to ban the production of fissile materials used in nuclear weapons manufactory.
The Egyptian diplomat made the remarks during the closing session of the Conference on Disarmament (CD), 2014 held in Geneva.
The suggested agreement will lead to prevention of nuclear weapons production, the diplomat said.
Also, Ramadan urged to keep the outer space away from armed conflict, reiterating the importance of giving guarantees by the nuclear states to not threaten other non-nuclear countries.
Ramadan expressed disappointment over failure to carry out the results of the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) held on 1995.
The review conference, held in 1995, endorsed the aims and objectives of the Middle East peace process and recognizes that efforts in this regard, as well as other efforts, contribute to, inter alia, a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons as well as other weapons of mass destruction.
In his speech, the Egyptian diplomat reviewed number of effects of the proliferation of nuclear weapons on humanity citing the results of Humanitarian Impact Of Nuclear Weapons Conferences in Oslo, March 2013 and in Nayarit, February 2014.
