South African President Jacob Zuma should pay back $500,000 of public funds used to upgrade his private residence in a scandal that rocked his government, the treasury said Monday.

"The reasonable percentage... that the President would have to pay personally would be 87.94 percent. This percentage corresponds to 7,814,155 rand," the National Treasury said in a statement.
