UN official: We will provide technical, political support to Egypt to achieve economic development

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative Richard Dictus said that the UN will provide technical and political support and consultations for the Egyptian government to help it benefit from its resources to achieve economic development.

In statements to MENA on Tuesday, Dictus said that the development assistance, which is not less than 1 percent of GDP, will be an incentive not a basic element to achieve sustainable development in Egypt.

The deal signed between the Egyptian government and the International Monetary Fund was the only long-term option to reduce poverty and create new jobs, Dictus said.

He further underlined the UN organizations' support for the Egyptian government to enhance social security networks, including the implementation of the school feeding project in Egypt.

The UN also worked with its partners to offer assistance to Syrian refugees in Egypt, he underlined.

He lauded measures taken in Egypt in coordination with the IMF and the World Bank to restructure the Egyptian economy with the view to establishing a strong industrial base to secure products in local market and export the surplus to African countries. 

The UN's priorities in the coming period are increasing the participation of women in the economy and social life, along with backing youth and promoting their greater participation in achieving development, Dictus said.
