NATO Press Officer Daniele Riggio
Brussels - Arab Today

NATO is mulling an official request by Libya's UN-backed government to help improve its security and defense capabilities, NATO Press Officer Daniele Riggio said.

Riggio made the remark during a meeting with an Egyptian delegation visiting Brussels.

The Egyptian delegation comprises a number of diplomats and representatives from newspapers and the Middle East News Agency.

Riggio noted that NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg received a formal request from Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj requesting NATO's advice and expertise in the field of defense and security institution building.

Riggio stressed that the 28-nation transatlantic alliance would continue backing the Libyan reconciliation government, as well as the United Nations efforts in Libya.

As for Iraq, he said NATO is cooperating with Iraq as it approved a request by the Iraqi authorities on improving Iraq's security capabilities and started training Iraqi security forces since the beginning of 2017.

Concerning Syria, he said NATO backs the Geneva talks, adding that the NATO chief underlined the importance of reaching a political solution.
