Manama - Arab Today

Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza received United Nations Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Amin Al-Sharqawi, and thanked him for the keen interest in supporting and encouraging the use of clean energy for sustainable development.

Mr. Al-Sharqawi thanked the minister for the adoption of the Net Metering as a mechanism to activate the introduction of solar energy in the housing, industry and tourism sectors. He said the UNDP is providing support through technical expertise to achieve the objectives of the National Renewable Energy Plan. He added New Metering would support Bahrain in achieving the goals of sustainable development and is a positive step towards the introduction of the private sector in the provision of solar technology in Bahrain. This, he added, would help Bahrain attract new investments and create work for Bahraini youth.

Mr. Al-Sharqawi also noted that UNDP, the United Nations’ Global Development Network, is operating in 177 countries and territories. He said for Bahrain, the programme provides technical support and assistance to national institutions, the private sector and civil society institutions to achieve national priorities and address challenges. It also supports institutional systems and capacity-building in the public and private sectors and parliament, supports social strategies, promotes the advancement of women, supports the provision of renewable energy and the sustainable environment.
He said the UNDP also continues to support the plan for sustainable development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals as part of Bahrain’s 20230 Economic Vision.
