The relations between Morocco and Mauritania returned to top the political scene during the recent period, as Chairperson of Mauritanian ruling party Sedi Mohamed Ould Mohamed hosted Morocco’s Acting Ambassador Al Hassan Bin Mossaty.

However, a press campaign has been launched two months ago accompanied statements from a Moroccan politician over Morocco’s possession of Mauritania exploded the situation.
The exchanged campaigns calmed, as the Moroccan King Mohamed VI sent his Prime Minister Abdel Elah Bankiran to Nouakchott to pave the way for a silent scene that has been broken with the recent meeting between the chairperson of Mauritania’s ruling party and Moroccan diplomat.
The Mauritanian politician expressed his keenness to restore normal relations with Morocco during the coming period, stressing that the Moroccan-Mauritanian relations should not be related to his country’s relations with Algeria or Polisario.
He acknowledged that the relations witness currently notable deterioration stressing that the Mauritanian side does not bear the responsibility of such deterioration. He added, “We have not violated Morocco or hosted any opponents or armed people threatening the security of their country.”
He stressed the need for transcending the historic problems between the two countries, stressing his country’s position to keep strong relations with Morocco, Algeria and Polisario. He said that it is the suitable decision to a country aspiring to perform a role to resolve the current crisis.
