Qatar’s public works authority plans to sign tomorrow construction contracts worth QAR50bn (US$13.7bn) for projects that include roads and other infrastructure, Al Sharq reported, citing Nasser Ali Al Mawlawi, who heads the agency. The Gulf state is gearing up to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and is planning to build nearly US$125bn worth of projects over the next six years. Among the major developments in the pipeline are a US$7bn international airport; a US$5.5bn deepwater seaport and US$20bn for new roads and highways. In addition to this, 12 eco-friendly stadiums are set to be built at a cost of over US$32bn with the first stadium ready by 2015.
