Egyptian parliamentarian Tamer Al Shahawy
Cairo - Mahmoud Hassani

Egyptian parliamentarian Tamer Al Shahawy praised the Egyptian efforts to combat terrorism, saying that the Egyptian government presented a unique model in its war against extremism. He added that the Egyptian government announced its clear refusal to the presence of extremists on its territories.

He added, during an interview with “Arabs Today”, “Egypt was one of the first countries around the world to warn of the danger of extremism three years ago and called the other countries for supporting it during its war that it adopts on the behalf of the whole world.”

He added that the country decided to launch its fight against terrorism individually, while only the Egyptian people rallied behind its government. He said that this war is not new, as it launched a similar war against terrorism in 1990s during the era of former President Hosni Mubarak who called for an international conference to combat terrorism.

He described the era of former President Mohamed Morsi as one of the worst ages in Egypt’s history, as he, and his Muslim Brotherhood group, turned the country, especially Sinai, into one of the extremists’ strongholds. He praised the steps taken by the government to eliminate the extremist groups there after three years of fight against terrorism.

He added, “The Egyptian authorities managed to eliminate 98 percent of extremists in Sinai which would be announced as a free area of extremists during the coming three months. He revealed, “During the rule of Muslim Brotherhood, former President Mohamed Morsi exerted increasing pressure on his then-Minister of Defense Abdel Fattah Al Sisi to accept the group’s elements in the military colleges, while he refused stressing his commitment to the standards upon which the colleges accept its students.”

He added, “One of the major standards is that the applicant should not affiliate to any religious or political groups so a large number of sons of the group’s leaders have been refused from joining the colleges.”

Regarding relations with the US under Trump Administration, he said, "There are plans prepared before Trump's arrival to the White House. He will exert his efforts to execute these plans, including the new Middle East." He added that he will transfer the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, while he waits the suitable time to take this step.

He appreciated the efforts exerted by the Egyptian Intelligence Authorities to push forward the Palestinian reconciliation, saying that Israel is the only beneficiary from the current division dominating the Palestinian scene.

He expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the current government stressing the need for adopting new policies during the coming period . He revealed that the coming ministerial reshuffle will include four or five ministers
