Cairo - Shaima Mekawy

Egyptian media presenter Motaz el-Demerdash believes Egypt is in the midst of another revolution. “People did not participate in Friday’s demonstrations to celebrate,” he said, in an exclusive interview with Arabstoday. “They were participating in a second revolution.” El-Dermerdash blamed President Mohammed Morsi’s Constitutional Declaration for current divisions in Egypt. Divisions, and the government’s failure to solve Egypt’s problems over the last two years, had led to one of the country’s “most serious phases yet,” he said. “Egyptians are turning to the streets to restore their stolen rights,” el-Dermerdash claimed. The TV presenter added that President Morsi had not yet honoured promises he made before the election, claiming he would be a President for the Egyptian people and not just the Muslim Brotherhood. Commenting on the Black Bloc, the loose group of young, masked anarchists who have taken to the streets, El-Demerdash understood the Bloc were young people “who wanted to achieve serious change,” but, the presenter admitted, he disagreed with their “style.” The well-known media personality addressed recent “difficult days,” after Islamists targeted Cairo’s Media Production City during nationwide January 25 celebrations. The Islamist strike impeded el-Demerdash from entering the tower. “Protesters rallied right in front of the gate,” he said. “Ultimately, our role is to deliver the truth to our audience,” el-Demerdash said. “Whether that truth serves the interests of the regime, or not.”
