Chief Prosecutor and Acting Chief of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Ebrahim Al Kawari has stated that investigation into the death of an inmate at the Reform and Rehabilitation Centre, has continued.
He said that investigation has so far revealed that the person in charge of delivering awareness lectures on the harmful effects of drugs discovered that the goods given to him by an inmate’s brother contained some narcotic materials, so he informed the Anti-Narcotics Directorate.
He said the lecturer, and an officer and a policeman for the Anti-Narcotics Directorate went to the Reform and Rehabilitation Centre to examine the materials, and the two officers in charge allowed them to meet the inmate who asked for the goods.
He added that the lecturer, the officer and the policeman beat the inmate and other two detainees, which led to the victim’s death.
Al-Kawari said that the SIU was informed about the testimonies of the two other inmates and eight guards from the Reform and Rehabilitation Centre, who confirmed the beating.
It also quizzed the Anti-Narcotics Directorate’s officer and policeman, as well as the lecturer, accused them of beating the victim to death and remanded them in custody pending the investigation.
The SIU also summoned the two officers of the Reform and Rehabilitation Centre and all those who contributed directly or indirectly in the crime in order to ensure that the dignity and safety of inmates are safeguarded, he added, noting the unit will work round-the-clock to complete the probe and make sure that all those responsible for the crime are held accountable.
