More than 20 Buenos Aires- bound flights from Brazil had to be canceled Thursday due to a 36- hour strike by Argentine unions opposed to the government.
Several affected airlines said the strike, initiated Wednesday by the Workers' Central Union of Argentina (CTA) and other labor groups, has disrupted air traffic at Buenos Aires' Jorge Newbery Airfield, known as "Aeroparque".
In Brazil, flights going to and coming from the Argentine capital had been canceled.
Brazilian airlines TAM and Gol, as well as Chile's LAN and Argentina's Austral and Argentina Airlines, which operate the Sao Paulo-Aeroparque route, said they were canceling all of the day's flights to Buenos Aires.
At Rio de Janeiro's international airport, Argentina Airlines canceled five scheduled flights to Buenos Aires and five return flights. At Sao Paulo's Guarulhos airport, the country's busiest, at least 16 flights were canceled Thursday morning by various airlines.
Brazil-Argentina flights to and from Buenos Aires' Ezeiza International Airport have not been affected by the strike. Both airports handle about the same number of flights, but Aeroparque handled more passenger traffic in 2013 than Ezeiza, according to Wikipedia.
