Austria's top banker has warned the EU not to make a European political union into a fateful issue for the euro currency. Head of the Austrian National Bank (OeNB) Ewald Nowotny said that it was important to keep the euro currency issue away from the formation of new EU contracts. "Every change to an EU contract is currently a very shaky project - and I would not want to attach the fate of the euro currency to this kind of uncertainty." In the long run, one could consider a new European constitution, said the OeNB head - but for now, it was important to be pragmatic and concentrate on the concrete problems at hand.
