The city of Rome has earmarked six million euros in incentives for taxi drivers who scrap their old gas guzzlers and buy more environmentally friendly models, especially ones outfitted for the disabled. Taxi drivers who buy hybrids or alternative-fuels vehicles are eligibile for a 5,000-euro rebate, while as much as 10,000 euros are redeemable towards the purchase of an ecological car fully equipped for wheelchairs. "We've already had dozens of requests, which is pretty good considering the program has only been operative for a few days," said Antonello Aurigemma, transport councillor.
