The study on the selection of the best location for the construction of a new commercial port between the towns of Dellys and Ténès is being finalized, an official of the Ministry of Transport said on Thursday."We launched a study, which is being finalized, between the cities of Dellys (Boumerdes) and Ténès (Chlef) to find the best possible location of the future commercial port of the central region," Abdelkrim Rezal, the ministry director for studies. The capacity of Algiers port, Algeria’s largest port facility will one day reach saturation that is why the government proposed the creation of a "greenfield port," an open space away from the city, he explained. Most of the Mediterranean ports are locked in an urban fabric which makes it difficult to develop, extend and connect them to various networks."We seek an open space with the possibility of extensions of land and sea sides," he added. The new port should be among those with a deep shallower draft to accommodate the latest generation ships, large spaces especially for the treatment of containers and a logistics base.
