Tokyo stocks dropped 0.94 percent Thursday on yen's appreciation.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 189.11 points, from Wednesday at 20,033.52. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange declined 24.60 points, or 1.49 percent, to 1,623.88.
Decliners were led by insurance, rubber products and mining issues.
The turnover was 2,542.92 billion yen (about 20.51 billion U.S. dollars
