Khalifa University has wrapped up its first Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) summer camp on August 21st, with an exciting "Robo" Competition at its Abu Dhabi campus.
Over 30 students participated in front of their peers, University students and faculty, and the media. The winners were, first place team: Amira Obaid, Noura Al Ghafri, Sheikha Al Mujaini and Fatma Al Amri, and in second place the team consisting of Hamad Al Dhanhani, Hamad Khaled and Mohammed Al Mansoori, and in third place, Latifa Al Mansoori, Eman Al Hosani, Alhanoof Mohammed and Fatma Al Hammadi. The students were selected to represent the U.A.E. in the upcoming "RoboCup" being held in Thailand in 2015.
The camp was designed as a platform to inspire high school students interested in pursuing a career in engineering or the technology sector. Over the course of the week, the students were required to design and build their own robot, which they used in the competition. In addition, the students had the opportunity to learn and have fun through hands on activities revolving around robotics, mechanics, electronics, chemistry, programming, design, math, arts and physics.
The STEM summer camp aimed to inspire students through a programme that included exciting topics, challenges and competitions, and gave them the opportunity to explore the world of engineering, and meet engineering students and professors.
"We are thrilled with the outcome of our first STEM summer camp, and we are very much looking forward to seeing how our U.A.E. representatives perform at the "RoboCup" next year," said Dr. Bayan Sharif, Dean of Engineering at the University. "Khalifa University is dedicated to communicating the importance of studying science and technology to the youth of the U.A.E., and we strongly believe that one of the ways to do this, and perhaps the best way, is to give young people the chance to immerse themselves in hands-on activities that will give them an idea of what they are capable of, and what they can spend their careers doing. Robotics, mechanics, chemistry, electronics, all of these are fun and exciting fields that can lead to successful, fulfilling careers, and we are pleased to encourage students to pursue them."
