London - BBC

The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company has announced plans to make its first production in ten years. The company, which ceased production work in 2003, is to collaborate with Scottish Opera, to stage Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance. Ian Martin, from D'Oyly Carte, said they were "excited to be starting a new chapter in our lengthy history". The show will open in Glasgow as part of Scottish Opera's 2012-13 Season. More details will be released shortly. Alex Reedijk, General Director of Scottish Opera said "D'Oyly Carte is synonymous with Gilbert and Sullivan, so when we were considering re-introducing G&S to our audiences it was both an obvious partnership and a timely opportunity to bring together our respective areas of expertise." D'Oyly Carte Opera were forced to suspend production when it was denied funding from the English Arts Council. It was originally formed in 1878 by Richard D'Oyly, although it closed in 1982. Six years later it was reformed, and went on to present Gilbert and Sullivan productions until 2003.
